This is dedicated to my uncle, Robert Johnson or Uncle Bob as he's been known to me. He and my Auntie Kay are my god parents. It was always cool growing up to know if something every happened to my parents they would be there for support. I never thought it would be the other way around. But that is what I offer to them here now as an adult... as a friend.
Uncle Bob is undergoing chemo right now in Bend Oregon for melanoma related cancer. He is in the absolute fight for his life. Despite aggressive treatment and surgery the cancer has spread and he and his family are caught dealing with an emotional rollercoaster.
My uncle isn’t a kiteboarder but he is a highly skilled fly fisherman. I know that his time on the water with rod and reel granted him sublime moments of peace and intense calm. Water to me has provided the same in so many different ways.
This Saturday I will compete in a kiteboard endurance race where I will ride a set course continuously for 8 hours. I am not so motivated to achieve the fastest lap nor record the furthest distance. I am however interested in pushing my body past the point of exhaustion and continuing on. With my uncle, aunt and their children in my thoughts, I will move forward.
I hope this event brings them peace and calm to deal with the things they must. I hope they feel the strength and energy of all the athletes. I hope the sunshine we feel warm them and the wind move them forward without fear. Healing positive energy surrounding... enveloping, making them strong.
