A little background...I decided earlier this year that I would train and work towards completing this years Portland Marathon (October 4th, 2009) The furthest I have ever run before is only 7 miles and the the idea of running 26.2 miles is frankly kind of scary and seems impossible.

A large part of my motivation to work towards this 26.2 mile goal came from working with the kids at St. Andrew Nativity School in NE Portland. I tutor the students once a week in English, Math, and Spanish and I see some similar internal struggles with the kids and their academics. Some math problems or certain conjugations are very frustrating and hard to comprehend, but I have never once had a kid give up on a problem and declare it too hard or impossible. The kids at St. Andrew are the most dedicated and hard working students I have ever encountered and I feel that they have truly inspired me to look beyond my own barriers and complete the Portland Marathon.

St. Andrew Nativity School is the only tuition-free private middle school in the Northwest. The school receives no funding from any governmental or religious agencies. The financial support of 1,455 individual donors, corporations and foundations is a strong indicator of the value the community places on these services offered to the poverty-level students and families. St. Andrew Nativity School serves students who typically enter the program three to four grade levels behind in reading and math skills. By the time they graduate from the school, they have increased their measurable academic skills an average of five grade levels.

This school has found a special place in my heart. I believe the education and physical activity programs provided to the students are an integral part in keeping drugs and violence out of their lives. Athletics is key to the development of a healthy lifestyle, self-confidence, and the value of teamwork. By sponsoring me to run this marathon you will be making a contribution to the students at St. Andrew Nativity School. More than 80% of the students participate in the athletic program. Your gift will allow Nativity to continue the partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation and Catholic Youth Organization to offer athletic programs such as volleyball, basketball and track, and to provide uniforms, equipment, league fees and transportation.

I truly believe that active kids take more pride and value in their health, education, and future.
