| Juli Aistars' Fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society |
|
| Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and Myeloma are blood cancers that may have touched your life or the lives of someone you know. Every 5 minutes someone is diagnosed, and every 10 minutes someone dies from one of these diseases. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under age 20.
I am a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Radiation Oncology at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois. I have been caring for people with cancer for 25 years. Over the last eight years, I have trained for and run 29 events between 31 and 153 miles and 22 marathons in 18 states. This past December, I was women’s champion in a 48 hour running event in Arizona. From April 29th until May 5th, I ran 387 miles for blood cancers. I placed 2nd woman and 6th overall in an international field of experienced ultrarunners. The event is called the Self-Transcendence Six Day Race, held in Flushing, New York, in Flushing Meadow Corona Park, site of the 1965 World’s Fair. The website is:

All funds raised will go to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society whose mission is to cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and Myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. I am a volunteer facilitator for one of their support groups at Northwest Community Hospital, offering ongoing support and monthy meetings for people living with blood cancers and their families. The run will be dedicated to this support group family, to all those affected by blood cancers and to six people in particular who have been affected by blood cancers. Jack, a member of the support group at Northwest Community who gave so much to others, lost his life recently at age 63 after fighting Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma for many years. Barb, age 52, is currently undergoing maintenance chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This run will also be in memory of Ryan who lost her battle to Lymphoma at age 13, Wendy who lost her life to Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 23, Ollie and Joe whose lives were also taken by Lymphoma. My goal was to raise at least $4,000 for people living with blood cancers. Thanks to the generosity of all those who donated so far, over $4,000 has been sucessfully raised. The site will stay open for a few more weeks. If you would like to donate, it is not too late.
Donations can be made online or
