| Team Lyons was founded in honor of Joe Lyons who suffered a fatal heart attack while competing in the inaugural Cohasset Triathlon in 2007. The Cohasset Triathlon benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF.) Only 38 years old when he passed away, Joe left behind his wife Karen and his son Sam who has been living with Juvenile (Type 1) Diabetes since he was 2. Sam was 7 years old at the time of Joe’s death. Joe was determined to be part of the cure for this devastating disease that in spite of vigilant treatment can lead heart failure, kidney failure, amputation, blindness and even death.
On June 29th, 2008, 54 members of Team Lyons crossed the finish line at the Cohasset Triathlon. The team came back even stronger in 2009 and thanks to the generosity of it’s donors has raised over $100,000 for JDRF in just two years!
On June 27, 2010, Team Lyons will return to Cohasset to raise money for JDRF. For the third consecutive year, Sam Lyons will sound the gun to start the race, and Team Lyons will compete as one to honor the generous, loving, and athletic person that Joe Lyons was. Besides being a champion for the cure for Juvenile Diabetes, Joe was a Little League coach, soccer coach, Treasurer of his son's PTO, graduate student, animal lover, athlete, golf buddy, father, friend, and husband. Joe's many interests and facets have been reborn in Team Lyons. Over 60 friends, colleagues, family, acquaintances, and even relative strangers have united to compete in the Cohasset Triathlon in Joe's memory and to continue his quest to make a difference in the world. Out of tragedy there grew unity, companionship — Team Lyons.
Thank you for your support. Together we can make a difference! |
