TEAM MND
Each day starts with hope / One day will end with a cure.
Welcome to Team MND's fundraising page. Team MND is an admittedly last minute effort by three racers to give more. We recently made a connection through diabetes, as we each have a loved one who has Type 1. M is for Mya, a daughter. N is for Norma, a wife. D is for David, a nephew. For these families, each day starts with hope knowing that one day will end with a cure. Any donation is greatly appreciated.

FROM MYA'S FAMILY WHOSE FATHER BRIAN IS RACING: "Are you contagious?" a friend asked. "No." "How long will you have it?" "I will have it forever or until they find a cure." Upon returning to school after being diagnosed in April 2008, this was the dialogue Mya had during a Q&A session she conducted with her 1st grade class. As Mya's parents we pray and hope for the latter - a CURE. One day we believe there will be one. Unfortunately, Mya is not alone in her fight, as 15,000 children are diagnosed each year. That is a staggering 40 children a day. For those children & their families, JDRF is the means to a cure. Mya's father Brian will be competing again this year with hope in his heart.

FROM NORMA'S FAMILY WHOSE HUSBAND JOHN WILL BE RACING: Norma was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in her teens and has diligently managed the disease for 25 years. Despite her success managing Type I, she has dealt with many of this disease’s adverse effects including low blood sugars and renal failure, which resulted in a kidney transplant in 2006. Last year, Norma successfully completed the 2008 Cohasset Tri (as did her live-kidney donor, our brother-in-law Bruce Staples), but unfortunately will be unable to participate this year due to a minor surgery procedure 4 weeks ago. Her husband, John, will be participating once again this year. He will be swimming, biking, and running hard to “find a cure.”

FROM DAVID'S FAMILY WHOSE AUNT SUSAN WILL BE RACING AS PART OF A RELAY TEAM WITH FANTASTIC FRIEND ANNE TRIBUSH: David Krane is an active 12 year old who plays soccer, baseball, guitar, trumpet and sings in the town-wide chorus.  When he was 8, he was diagnosed with Type I diabetes on the weekend of the Boston Marathon.  Since then, he has been running his own marathon to stay healthy. He is a patient at the Joslin Diabetes Clinic and a regular at the Joslin/Barton camps where he participated in a camp biathlon organized by Ironman Triathelete (and Type I diabetic) Jay Hewitt. David uses an insulin pump and recently completed a year long JDRF-sponsored clinical trial evaluating continuous glucose monitoring devices in kids. He has been active in helping to raise money for Children's Hospital in Boston and the Joslin Diabetes Center, partnering with marathon runners and participating in fundraising videos.  He even joined Governor Deval Patrick when he signed the Life Sciences Bill at the Joslin clinic.  David's positive approach to his disease - doing everything possible to keep it from standing in the way of what he wants to do - is an inspiration to his friends and family. This is David's first opportunity to help with fundraising for JDRF and he is grateful to everyone (especially his Aunt who is racing!) who supports the triathlon team for this most important cause.  He will be donating from his own bank account!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
