| I took my son to school last Feburary and what I thought would be a normal day, was the exact opposite. I received a phone call from his teacher shortly after leaving him, he had passed blood in his stool. I knew he needed to go to the dr. Here is where our Journey began... My Ped looked at me and said, "We are going to do some blood work, but I'm going to suggest you go home and pack a bag for the hospital. Only a few childrens hospitals have a hematology department." A hema what?? I thought to myself. Well the rest is history, When we arrived at Montefiore Childrens Hospital Dylan's platelets where 7,000. When he was admitted he had less than 3,000 platelets. Some facts:
Normal platelet count is between 150,000-400,000. When getting low counts such as Dylan's you had pretty good chances of complicatons such as internal bleeding and brain hemorrhage. Dylan needed an infusion of platelets! (ITP) is a disorder of the blood characterized by an abnormal decrease in the number of platelets in the blood. Platelets are cells in the blood that help stop bleeding. A decrease in platelets can result in easy bruising, bleeding and internal bleeding. In most cases, the cause of ITP is unknown. It is not contagious, meaning a child cannot "catch it" from playing with another child with ITP.

This will be my 3rd triathlon season, and there is nothing else I could race for other than what is my heart and soul. I am lucky to have such supportive family and friends. My heart broke at our last hematologist visit, when my baby looked at me and said "Mommy, I promise, I will be a good boy." That is when I knew I had to do something, even if it's just for today that you think about us and all the others who live through this on a daily basis. Dylan's counts have been great the last 2 visits we had. Everytime I see a bruise I think god, please just let it be a bruise! I'm asking you to please help me to support the ITP foundation. All of the donations will go to the ITP foundation and are tax deductable. I have created a video that will take you 9 minutes to look at, but I created it with all I have. Sorry for the quality, home videos :) Enjoy.....
