Hiking Deep - Saving Life
Welcome to my Hike for Discovery home page.
|Me in the Canyon, March 2001|
Here’s a status update of my progress with fundraising and training. So far I’ve raised $8,411, which is over 168% of my $5000 goal. Thanks so much to everybody who has helped out so far and to those who plan to. None of this would be possible without your generosity. UNBELIEVEABLE!! In terms of training, we’ve done 8 hikes as a team so far that have totaled over 50 miles in Berkeley, Oakland, Marin, Contra Costa County and San Francisco. The biggest ones are coming up in September – we’re training hard to prepare for the biggest of all in el Canyon Grande.
Hike For Discovery is a non-profit endurance training program that benefits the LLS. I will be hiking in the Grand Canyon on September 30, 2006 in honor of all people affected by blood cancer. The money I've raised will pay for support groups, educational programs, and research to find a cure for these cancers. Blood cancer currently kills more children in the US than any other cancer and an estimated 110,960 new cases of blood cancer will be diagnosed this year, and some 55,100 patients will die. I have met a few people battling blood cancer, and their stories and heartfelt efforts are quite inspiring, to say the least.
I will be hiking in dedication and in honor of Elaine Spiecker, Doug Lubbers, Aunt Liza, George Politas, Ann King, Conrad Duke, Matthew Barron, Notker Rost, Friedrich Burbach, Jack Longhorn, and Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester. If any of you know anyone who has been diagnosed with blood cancer, living or deceased, I would very much like to hike on their behalf as well. Please let me know if you have anyone in mind.
Please make a donation to support my participation in Hike for Discovery and help advance the Society's mission. No amount is too large or too small. If you decide to donate, I will personally match 2% of your donations. I also promise to send you a postcard from the Grand Canyon when I'm there. Nice perk, huh? The benefits of donating reach far beyond LLS itself...what goes around comes around. I hope you'll visit my web site often, so that you can see how my training and fundraising efforts are going. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
