Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a non-profit prevention program that uses an interactive psychology-based curriculum and running to encourage pre-teen girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles.
The after-school program addresses all aspects of a girl's development including her physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. The twice-weekly lessons, along with physical activity, are aimed at providing the tools girls need to avoid risky adolescent behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, early sexual activity, eating disorders and obesity.
Girls on the Run is the first of an entirely new genre of recreation programs. It combines physical training for a non-competitive 3.1 mile running event with warm-ups, team-building activities and workouts that focus on character-building and practical life skills. These skills include how to get along in a group, how to assert yourself in a healthy manner, how to stop a gossip chain and how to combat the negative and unattainable images young girls see in the media.
At the end of each 10-week program, cheered on by their families and friends, the girls participate together in an exhilarating 5K run.
Thank you for considering Girls on the Run of Dane County for your tax-deductible donation. Your donation will make a tremendous difference in our efforts to reach girls of all economic circumstance throughout Dane County. |
