“School’s out for summer!” This phrase has elicited huge smiles from kids and lyrics to a rock song. But, if you are a child living in a homeless shelter with a family on a very limited income, that very phrase may cause anxiety and concern.” What am I going to do all summer? Who is going to take care of me?’ And, if you are parent working hard to maintain a job, you’ll wonder how you are going to handle safe and affordable childcare.
“Summer Camp for Homeless Kids" is a new program initiative for Genesis Home. With our volunteers participating in THE GREAT HUMAN RACE we hope to raise enough money to send every Genesis Home child-from preschool to high school- to summer camp.
Genesis Home is a non-profit transitional, family shelter located in downtown Durham. Since 1989, we have helped over 375 families transition to permanent housing and stability. At any given time, we have approximately 30-35 children living here with their parents. How can you help?
JOIN OUR TEAM, led by volunteer and Olympic athlete Mechelle Lewis and walk or run the race. You can also make a donation to “Summer Camp for Homeless Kids” on this website!
How your donation helps:
$15 – lunch box, water and foods containers
$25 – a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen
$40 – sturdy running shoes
$50 - one week at day camp (at a subsidized rate with the help of the YMCA)
$60 – shorts, t-shirts, socks, hat, rain jacket
$200 – four weeks of camp for one child
$400 – eight weeks of day camp for one child Donation Goal: to help every camp age child at Genesis Home we need to raise $10,000! Your donation could change a homeless child’s summer!
