The Church World Service Immigration and Refugee Program exists to welcome new refugee arrivals who have been forced to flee their home countries and are offered the opportunity to start a new life of peace and dignity here in the Triangle. We serve individuals arriving from Burma, Bhutan, Congo, Cuba, Haiti, Iraq and Vietnam, as well as other countries, connecting them with community resources that meet their immediate needs, promote long-term self-sufficiency, and empower them to lives of peace and hope. This year we are racing to raise funds in support of two main initiatives:
- Integration Services: Initiatives such as our “Crafty Conversations” women’s weekly craft group, providing refugee women the opportunity to build social networks, develop their crafting skills, discover leadership potential and practice the English language. Funds are also being raised in support of the planning and execution of our first World Refugee Day Celebration festival. Undertakings such as these two strengthen community involvement in welcoming refugees to the Triangle and provide refugees with the chance to take pride in their heritage while also learning skills that help move them into their futures.
- Immigration Services: Although all refugees arrive legally in the United States, having been welcomed and pre-screened by the U.S. Government, after arriving in the country there are multiple legal services which may be necessary to refugees’ adjustment into the community and social well-being. Our Immigration Services program provides legal services to refugees who are seeking adjustment of status (green cards), naturalization, and family reunification, and is dependent on community support to meet its fiscal goals.
