SWOOP (Strong Women Organizing Outrageous Projects) is a women’s service organization that serves underserved populations through one-day service projects, nine months of the year. SWOOP volunteers accomplish large results in small periods of time. SWOOPers have recently:

- planted a garden, built a boardwalk and installed benches at the Durham Center for Senior Life;

- worked on several houses in various stages of development with Chatham Habitat for Humanity;

- partnered with a coalition of six agencies – PLM Families Together, Urban Ministries of Wake County, Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolinas, Legal Aid/Farmworkers Unit, People of Faith Against the Death Penalty, and NC Justice Center – to paint the interior of a house, collect yard debris and landscape the yard.

Help SWOOP pay for a workday! Please help SWOOP reach our donation goal of $6,000. The money we raise will support our April 10 workday. We will be working with Durham Affordable Housing Coalition and Keep Durham Beautiful for a community improvement project in Southside neighborhood in Durham. We will renovate the community center, plant a community garden and install rain barrels at the center. We will also assist at individual homes, cleaning gutters and downspouts for older homeowners who are unable to complete these tasks by themselves.

How can you help?

Walk with us. Show up on race day and look for the SWOOP sign. For walkers there is no pre-registration or fee. For runners, there is a $20 registration fee. Runners should click the Registration Link above. Walkers do not need to pre-register.
