| For 23 years, the Durham Literacy Center (DLC) has helped over 10,000 adults change their lives through literacy training. Each year, our expertly trained tutors work one-one-one with over 500 Durham adults and teens who cannot read a bus schedule or a medical prescription. Our Adult Literacy, English Speakers of Other Languages and Teen Career Academy programs equip our students with the literacy skills they need to succeed in life, and help them with basic computer, financial and employment skills.
Despite our success, 20% of Durham’s residents lack basic literacy skills, and over 32% of Durham students drop out of school each year. We can only serve a small fraction of those in need due to limited resources. And in this period of unprecedented economic uncertainty, our resources are scarcer than ever.
