Thank you for visiting my Fuel the Flame fundraising page. This event is a long distance charity bicycle ride from Boston, MA to Johnstown, NY that will support FLAME(www.flamesoftrock.com), an inspirational group of developmentally disabled musicians. Fuel the Flame not only supports FLAME's cause, but it also allows me to continue a tradition that has been a trademark of my family for generations. The tradition of helping people with developmental disabilities was started by my grandfather Paul Hermon who, as a parent of a down syndrome child, helped to start the Lexington Center in 1953. The Lexington Center, a private, non-profit organization located in Johnstown, NY is where FLAME got its feet off the ground. The Center not only provides services to the musicians of FLAME, but it also supports many others, including mentally retarded, physically disabled, and/or mentally ill children and adults.
Unfortunately, my grandfather died shortly after the Lexington Center was created, and he was not able to see the extent to which his dream had come true.
My grandfather's legacy was continued, however, by his son and my father, Jim Hermon. As a teacher at Edison Technical High School in Rochester, NY, my father instituted and directed a special education program. In addition to his professional work, he devoted much of his free time to disabled people by volunteering and coaching for the Special Olympics. Sadly, like my grandfather, my father's contribution to the community was cut short when he died of a heart attack at an early age in November of 2005.
In an effort to support a great cause and continue my family's tradition, I co-organized Fuel the Flame. Your tax deductible donation will not only help FLAME produce a CD and purchase a customized tour bus, but most importantly, your support will help FLAME to spread the message that anything is possible while giving hope to millions of disabled people and their families. |
