Fresh Start Recovery Coalition is a non-for-profit organization formed to aid homeless, disenfranchised, suffering individuals, families, and the community by establishing support systems in the field of substance abuse to meet the increasing demand for services. Addiction affects everyone in one form or another whether it is direct or indirect. Families can and are torn apart by substance abuse.
Statistics
Approximately 50% to 80% of all child abuse and neglect cases substantiated by child protective services involve some degree of substance abuse by the child’s parents. 31% of America’s homeless suffer from drug abuse or alcoholism. As many as 60% of adults in Federal prisons are there for drug-related crimes; Approximately one-third of AIDS cases reported in 2000 and most cases of hepatitis C in the United States are associated with injection drug use. Many of America’s top social problems also relate to or impact drug abuse.
Based on the above statistics, substance abuse is a major public health problem that impacts society on multiple levels. Directly or indirectly, every community is affected by drug abuse and addiction, as is every family. Drugs take a tremendous toll on our society at many levels.
The Stigma of Recovery
Individuals who suffer or have suffered from substance abuse may or may not recover. The outcome relies on each individuals life choices. As a community, it is our
responsibility not to judge individuals who attempt to make a change in their life by starting a journey to recovery. However, as you might already know a great majority of our community discriminates against individuals in recovery. The “Not in my backyard” philosophy has become a keyword that highlights the stigma of recovery.
Fresh Start Recovery Coalition is determined to abolish the stigma by being the agency that we are now and will be. We acknowledge the importance of support systems and prevention efforts for substance abusers, recovering substance abusers, families affected by addiction and substance abuse. Our current goals are to assist recovering substance abusers in their journey to recovery, individuals with mental disabilities, homeless individuals, those transitioning from incarceration back into society and individuals living with HIV/AIDS by providing family of choice structured sober living and other services such as counseling, career and medical services that will strengthen their conviction to leave their negativities behind and continue on building their life as a productive member of the society. As a non-profit agency, the existence of Fresh Start Recovery Coalition is solely to benefit the community overall. Therefore, we encourage involvement from the general public to assist our agency in creating a better community for all of us to live in. |
