‘First Descents Iceland’ is a whitewater kayak expedition set to explore Iceland’s rivers and waterfalls in a new way. Extreme kayaking professionals Brad Ludden, Rush Sturges, Ben Brown, Ian Garcia, Patrick Camblin and Tyler Bradt will spend two weeks during peak run off in June 2009 paddling rivers and waterfalls no one has attempted before. The team hopes to raise $20,000 through pledges allowing 20 young adults to attend First Descents, a free kayak camp for young adults with cancer. Pledges will be made for every ‘first descent’ or un-paddled river or waterfall the expedition achieves. This effort will help cancer battling individuals achieve their own first descents to help them through their battle with cancer. Peripherally Iceland will be exposed as the incredible adventure travel destination it is. Waterfall descents sit on the cutting edge of extreme kayaking and Iceland boasting the highest concentration of waterfalls on the planet. This Mecca of whitewater rests as a rarely visited destination for extreme kayakers and outdoor enthusiasts. With the help of Jón Heiðar Andrésson, the team will set out to explore never paddled rivers and waterfalls. The products of the expedition will be to showcase the adventure travel opportunities of Iceland, raise support for First Descents and define the possibilities of extreme kayaking.
