In 2007, after 3 years of infertility, Charley & Kaycie fell pregnant with twin girls. The excitement and typical worry of how they were going to be able to do this soon turned to heartbreaking news and dim statistics.
In April 2007, one of their twin girls, Reagan, was diagnosed with a Lower Urinary Track Obstruction (LUTO). At the time, they thought she was a boy and it was a "quick" fix. Their high-risk OB immediately sent them to a fetal hospital to discuss options.
In May 2007, they met with the specialists at a well-known fetal care center. It was there where they learned that the situation was far more harrowing than any parent could imagine. Reagan then was thought to be a girl and they were told if they wanted to pursue fetal surgery that was fine, but consider it a worthless effort. They wanted to "save" them from the painstaking process solely because they used in-vitro to conceive and they could at least bring "one" healthy baby home if they just leave it be.
Immediately, Kaycie & Charley went on a hunt for more answers. This couldn't be? How can you ask someone to buy a crib and a casket? It was then when Kaycie stumbled onto Dr. Quintero, via a message board, that a dose of hope was given.
Kaycie and her parents made the 1000 mile plus trek to Tampa where, though still slim and involving risks, Dr. Q gave Reagan a CHANCE to live. He performed a vesicoshunt procedure on Reagan, and her fraternal twin sister was unaffected by it all.
Unfortunately, the shunt fell out 5 days after it was placed. And, at 29 weeks, the girls entered this world entirely too soon. Reagan lived 1 hour and 27 minutes and Addison spent 54 days in the NICU. Reagan was officially diagnosed with a form of cloaca. An extremely rare form of LUTO. Unfortunately, because of it's severity her lungs were never able to develop.
Addison is a thriving 26 month old and without Fetal Hope and Dr. Q, she may not be with us today either. Dr. Q gave Kaycie & Charley hope that it COULD be okay...and by helping prolong Reagan's condition, he ultimately saved Addison as well.
We walk with/in honor of Addison and in memory of our angel & hero...Reagan Dawn.
Fetal distress and syndromes affect 800,000 pregnancies per year in the US alone. This is four times the amount of cases per year as breast cancer.
We lose more than 200 babies a day to fetal distresses and syndromes.
With your donation, we can make a difference in bringing hope and changing lives.
