This page was created in memory of Xander. Xander recently passed away and has left a big hole in a lot of people’s hearts. Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue felt it only fitting that Xander be honored by this fundraising page. And we know this prince of a dog would indeed be happy to help raise money for the shelter that once took him in and saw that he had a chance at a life far different from the one he had known before. Xander went on to live a charmed life. But we know that so many others are still waiting for such an opportunity. Please help us help this wonderful organization by making a donation in memory of Xander. Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue hopes to raise at least a thousand dollars for the shelter. In doing so, we salute them for what they have done in our community and what they will do in the future.
The following message was written by Kathleen O’Gorman who adopted Xander in 2004
In Memory of Xander
From his initial appearance in our lives, Xander offered little explanation about his background and physical condition. Shabby, thin, dusty, with ground-down front teeth and ugly tumors hanging from his belly, he stood there unresisting, accepting this new twist of fate, looking out on life through hollow, downcast eyes, dim with light and hope. Only Xander knew where he came from and lived before arriving at the LA/SPCA, but we do know that this was the turning point in his life. Thanks to alert and responsive shelter attendants, Xander was transferred into the care of his new family, the Gulf Coast Doberman Rescue, and began a new and redemptive chapter in his life. Thus began the transformation of his body and his spirit.
Xander remained with his GCDR family for about a year before being adopted into his forever home in 2004. What a blessed day that was for him and his new family! In the company of his canine brother Blessing and sister Hildegard, as well as two feline brothers, Yin and Yang, Xander awakened to his own beauty and goodness. You could see it in the merriment and mischief in his eyes and hear it in his excited, chirping bark. Xander didn’t grow on us; he won us over in an instant. He had that way about him.
It didn’t take long before the real, beautiful, self-assured, jokester Xander emerged and captivated the hearts not only his new family, but all those two and four-legged friends he made wherever he went. His primary way of charming humans and winning their love and attention was to lean on them or slip his head under their hands or nudge them with his noble nose. And who could fail to admire and caress those long, velvety ears!
Xander was a regular at the Mississippi River levee dog park. On those walks he was apt to meander, going his own way, following his bliss, checking out whatever caught his attention or sparked his interest. While the others swam and fetched balls thrown into the river, Xander would stand quietly in its healing powers, chest-deep, looking out into something that the rest us didn’t or couldn’t see. It was like he was drawn to another realm of interest or attraction. He usually was the last to leave when we began our trek back to the car.
On March 6, 2008 Xander passed away peacefully in his bed after enjoying a good breakfast and his daily trip to the dog park. Perhaps he could no longer resist being drawn into that faraway place that held such fascination for him. Perhaps he had fulfilled his mission in life -- gentling us a bit, lightening our hearts, calling us to the important things, showing us how to love unconditionally, and ultimately teaching us that in letting him go we would remain forever together. |
