| Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a non-profit prevention program with the mission of “educating & preparing girls for a lifetime of self-respect & healthy living.” Through running, playing games & discussing important issues, participants are empowered with self-awareness, a sense of achievement & a foundation in team building. Each 10 week (20-lesson) session is led by trained female coaches that teach life lessons such as: dealing with body image, resisting peer pressure, & making healthy nutrition and lifestyle decisions. At the conclusion of the season, participants create & implement a community service project & run/walk in a 5K event with adult mentor Running Buddies.
GOTR of Deschutes County was established in 2007 & is a non-profit, independent council of GOTR International which has a network of over 150 locations serving 50,000 girls annually. Our council is comprised primarily of volunteers and is responsible for raising all of its own operating funds. We provide full and partial scholarships for girls in need.
Due to a loss of individuals in key leadership positions and difficulty fundraising over the past year, the Board of Directors has decided to suspend the Fall 2010 season in order to restructure the council into a committee-based operation. We are recruiting volunteers with diversified skill sets who will support the organization’s needs. We are also requesting monetary donations from the community in order to achieve financial stability. A strong response from the community will allow us to resume operations in Bend by Spring 2011, establish financial sustainability, and eventually initiate the program in other areas of Deschutes County.
