| On September 11th, 2001 David Retik and Patrick Quigley were murdered by terrorists. Their wives, Susan Retik and Patti Quigley were both raising children and pregnant when their husbands were taken from them. While suffering through this unimaginable and public tragedy, Susan and Patti were swept up in the embrace of their families and communities. This support allowed them to continue to be loving mothers to their children and to move beyond their grief to help others. In 2003 they founded Beyond the 11th.
Beyond the 11th is a non-profit organization that supports widows in areas devastated by war and terrorism. When they learned that widows in Afghanistan face a bleak future with even their survival uncertain, they decided to channel their own grief toward helping others and specifically Afghan widows.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2006 will mark the 5 year anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. For the third consecutive year, the founders and supporters of Beyond the
11th will ride from Ground Zero to Greater Boston in CYCLING FORWARD,
the organization’s primary fundraising event.
The money we raise will go to support income-generating Programs for widows in Afghanistan. By helping to alleviate the desperate circumstances which face Afghan widows, Beyond the 11th will not only have a humanitarian impact, but will also help fight terrorism here in the United States. How? By changing a society which fostered and supported those terrorists responsible for the deaths of over 3000 Americans.
