| COCA Friends Annual Campaign |
|
The end of summer marks the beginning of a brand new school year for all of Cincinnati’s children. We can all recall the “back to school” excitement of making lists of school supplies, clothing and the other essentials for preparing to return to class, seeing old friends and learning new things.
But, what if a child you know is one of the estimated 1,000,000 who will miss school every day this school year, due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students? Some of the most important school supplies a child can receive this year are the tools of knowledge and empowerment…tools learned through COCA’s School-Based Personal Safety Program.
COCA has served over 150,000 children through 7,580 one-hour classroom presentations in 375 area schools, including public, parochial and private school settings. Our program utilizes videos, interactive discussions, role-playing and extension activities for children in grades PreK-12. Following classroom presentations, children are invited to speak individually with COCA staff. Any information children disclose requiring adult intervention is forwarded to the appropriate personnel for intervention and follow-up.
Most telling, last year’s statistics show that 24% (or 601 of the 2,545 the children who voluntarily talked to COCA staff) disclosed information requiring further adult intervention immediately following the classroom presentation. Of those disclosures, 53% were related to current, previous or possible peer abuse and bullying. 7% were related to current, previous or possible sexual abuse, 8% were related to current, previous or possible physical abuse and 192 children or 32% were related to current, previous or possible family and personal issues.
- $60 will cover one classroom visit
- $180 will pay for 75 kids to participate in the curriculum
- $250 will provide an age-specific video for the classroom presentation
- $500 will pay for an entire grade level at a mid-sized school
- $1,000 will support the program at a mid-sized school
With your help, we could make a powerful statement together toward addressing this need in our community. Please consider making your gift today. |
