|The Georgetown Independent School District Council of PTA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization representing over 10,400 students of the Georgetown I.S.D., has joined forces with the Georgetown Police Department in a collaborative effort to take on one of the most important challenges facing our youth today – Childhood Obesity.|
We hope to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and good nutrition. As the rate of childhood obesity increases, the consequences are alarming, including diabetes and cardiac issues. Furthermore, our children are now predicted to be the first generation with a life expectancy shorter than that of their parents. Our Georgetown community can unite to help change this course for the future generations.
Working together, we are developing a comprehensive program combining education for better nutrition as well as tips for training for a 5K or Fun Run, and this education will culminate in the race. We hope that these healthy changes will become part of the students' lives, not just for a day, but for a lifetime.
Proceeds for this cause will sponsor our Chase the Chief Nutrition and Fitness Education Program, as well as a donation of fitness equipment through our “Improve Our Gym” contest, and support other programs including the G.I.S.D.'s new Recycling and Composting Program, UIL Academic Competitions, and Reflections Art Contest. The PTA and Police Department are embarking on this journey together to engage our children and their families in exercise and improved nutrition to help them lead longer, healthier lives. We are actively seeking sponsors and donors from our community that will help support these mutual goals.
We look forward to working with you to promote healthy, active living for the children of our community.
