This will be my third year running the CHaD half-marathon, which will take place on Saturday, September 6...two weeks to the day before I get married! I'm happy to report that this year my best friend, Molly (who ran with me the last two years), and my friends Lacey and Jill (first time CHaD half runners!), will be running with me. Below is my story which explains some of why I am so passionate about this cause.
In 1997, when I was 16 years old, I was diagnosed by pediatric neurologists at CHaD with a chronic condition called chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) affecting the impulses that my nerves send to the muscles in my arms and legs. CIDP results in my immune system stripping the myelin sheath off of my nerves (starting with my arms and legs) causing me to get weaker and weaker. Thanks to the treatments I got at CHaD (and still get every five weeks) I have continued to lead a healthy and productive life. I was able to keep playing varsity sports in high school, did intramurals in college, and now run regularly. Without treatment CIDP would render me unable to climb a set of stairs, much less run a half marathon. So for all those reasons -- but even more importantly, because of the way I felt cared for as a person by everyone, at every level at CHaD -- it gives me great pleasure to participate in this half-marathon to benefit CHaD.
I have a very ambitious goal this year, but I’m confident that we’ll be able to reach it! I hope you'll consider joining me in supporting CHaD, and remember that gifts of any size are very much appreciated--every bit helps!
