Capital Campaign - Lincolnway Special Recreation Association Recreation Center
Achieving our dream of an accessible recreation center
Therapeutic recreation, such as the activities offered by the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association (LWSRA), is the purposeful utilization and enhancement of recreational and social activities as a way to maximize a person’s overall health, well-being and quality of life. Studies show that participation in therapeutic recreation can reduce pain, depression and anxiety and improve immune system, endurance, mental alertness, muscular strength, flexibility, balance and cardiovascular functioning.

Currently, LWSRA does not have its own facility and is solely dependent on schools, park districts and churches for its over 200 programs and events offered each year. An LWSRA center will provide a home for adaptive activities and will allow LWSRA, in conjunction with continued use of community resources, to expand its programs and events and reduce, if not eliminate, waiting lists.

Thanks to the $2.5 million from the Park and Recreational Facility Construction (PARC) grant from the Illinois DNR, the dream of an accessible recreation center for our community will become a reality. The total cost is $4.1 million and with capital funds and continued fund raising, the new 24,835 square foot building should be move-in ready by spring of 2013.

The LWSRA Recreation Center will be located near Laraway Rd. and Schoolhouse Rd. in New Lenox and will consist of offices, four recreation rooms, a teaching kitchen, gymnasium with a wheelchair-friendly floor, locker rooms, a therapeutic garden and a softball field designed for wheelchair movement. The facility will be fully accessible in order to accommodate its clients with special needs.
