About the Art Association of Harrisburg:
The Art Association of Harrisburg was founded in 1926 with a mission to promote the visual arts through education and exhibitions. Since that time, the Association has served thousands of children and adults through the art classes offered in four semesters annually, and has provided opportunities for artists both regionally and internationally to exhibit their art. The community has benefitted from the Association’s cultural offerings through enjoyment of the sixty exhibitions mounted annually, both in the main gallery and in sites throughout the region, and through the art classes providing enrichment and education.
Since 1964, the Art Association has been located in the historic Governor Findlay Mansion at 2l North Front Street in downtown Harrisburg, enabling the organization to participate fully in the fabric of the city’s activities and events. The location and the Association’s extensive seven-days-per-week operating hours make the organization a hub for visitors to the city. The Art Association founded Gallery Walk 23 years ago, a self-guided tour of all the city’s exhibition sites. The event now includes 35 sites, and attracts over 2000 visitors to the city.
The Association School offers classes in four semesters each year to students ages 5 through senior citizen. Scholarships are provided for individuals with financial need. Classes for children include Art for Kids ages 5-7, Junior Art for ages 8-10, Cartooning for ages 10 and up, Kids’ Drawing and Painting,Clay for Kids ages 8-12,and Fantasy Art. Adult classes include portraiture, life study, basic oil painting, acrylics, intermediate drawing and painting, open painting studio, landscape, watercolor, pottery, clay sculpture, mixed media, collage, and basic drawing. AAH classes are offered both at the Main Gallery and in four studios rented from the city in Reservoir Park.
The Association is governed by a Board of 21 Directors, and managed by a full-time President/Executive Director with a Curator, and four part-time staff. Over 700 members belong to the Art Association of Harrisburg, hailing from both the region and across the US, as well as from Mexico and Canada.
The goal of The Art Association of Harrisburg is to provide top-quality art education to children and adults, and to install exhibitions of excellence both in our main gallery and in sites throughout the area so that the widest population may enjoy them. The mission of AAH is to provide cultural excellence in the region through promoting the visual arts with education and exhibitions.
