| It was the beginning of the year 2011, a fresh start with new goals and plenty of fun adventures, memories, and laughter. Though, something happened to me that would not only change my life for the next 10 months, but also leave an impact for the rest of my life. I am a sixteen-year-old girl, halfway through my junior year in high school, and was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a very rare cancer. I was completely blind sided by the diagnosis. It had seemed like my life couldn’t get any better, having that I just got my license, I was finally experiencing the freedom of a teenage life: living through the excitement of high school and having fun with friends and family. After various x-rays, MRI’s, and doctor appointments, it seemed like the pain could not be answered. While I was experiencing intense leg pain, I thought the worst it could be was a bone infection; cancer was not even existent in my mind. Finally, my doctor recommended getting a biopsy to take tests on a small part of my bone. The results came back within 48 hours, along with a flood of tears from my parents and me. This aggressive bone tumor has attacked part of my kneecap along with my whole femur bone. I had no idea how extreme my life would change until the next day when the doctor explained everything. I’d be going through various tests at the hospital, chemotherapy treatment for almost 10 months, along with a large surgery. No more going to school? How did this happen so fast, I was caught so off guard. Unfortunately, the treatment needed to start fast as the pain was increasing at a fast pace. Now I live my life day-by-day, grateful for every second of it. I know there are ups and downs in life and we learn from every bit of it. Now I ask all of you to please join Team Allie. You will not only be helping me get through this rough journey, but also the many other kids who are finding their way through this same experience. Will you run for me? |
