| 9th Annual Breeze Against Wheeze |
|
| Students from Brown University are working along with other community groups on a “Breeze Against Wheeze” 5K race/3K walk that is being organized for April 25th, 2009 to raise money and community awareness for the Community Asthma Programs of Hasbro Children’s Hospital Asthma Camp. Asthma is the number one chronic condition in children, and the leading cause of hospitalization in children nationwide. Here in Rhode Island, the asthma rates are especially high and too many children with asthma do not have the education and support necessary to alleviate their condition. The Community Asthma Programs Asthma Camp has successfully provided this education and support for hundreds of children and families. The week-long summer asthma camp is for nine to 13 year olds with severe asthma to fully participate in outdoor activities while learning how to manage their asthma. A significant number of camp staff includes physicians, therapists, and EMTS who volunteer their time and make significant impact with the teens. After participating in the camp, the teens make comments on surveys reflecting improved communication with family, friends and medical personnel; increased self-esteem; and recognition that they are not alone with this chronic disease. Much of the program’s success is due to charitable donations from businesses and corporations like yours. Because of charitable donations made towards the “Breeze Against Wheeze” 5K race in previous years, 100% of the money raised went to the Asthma Camp, allowing all the campers to attend the camp for free! We hope to achieve this goal once again in 2009. |
