Hi. My name is Lindsey and I am a 8 year old 2nd grader. I was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome one day when I was 2 ½ years old and on my way to a baseball game. No one knows what causes my kidney to malfunction and it happened to me “out of nowhere” – there is still no cure. Over the past 6 years, I have been in and out of the hospital 30 times – the worst was for 10 weeks straight.
I have taken countless powerful medicines while battling this disorder, many with terrible side effects. They always stopped working after a period of time.
In December 2008, they were going to take out my kidneys. But an experimental drug administered through the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD) was a last effort and it has worked so far. I still have my kidneys and they are working well. I still relapse every few months, but the medicine has allowed me to detox from the terrible steroids, heal my bones and begin to grow again! I am even going to school full time!! And I love being just a little girl again.
Research funded through your donations has allowed me to get this far. It has given me the gift of time and the doctors are working hard to keep me in a long remission - their goal is at least 2 years! yay!!
I am happier now than I have been in the last 6 years, all thanks to the money you donate to research.
We do not know what lies ahead, and my disorder is not cured, but thanks to you, I have a smile on my face now!
Please continue to give and support the research efforts through Nephcure!
Thank you!! Love, Lindsey
