Even though the NYC Marathon is complete you can still donate!

As most of you know I began running when I started my new job at Penn in 2006. Peer pressure from my new co-workers had me training for the Philadelphia Marathon within months. I quickly found out that training for a 26.2 mile race is more than just going out for a morning run a few days a week. It required discipline, motivation, endurance and heart. When I completed the six months of training and crossed the finish line I knew that I was capable of anything.

In January of 2008 I joined "Back on My Feet," a non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of Philadelphia's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. I quickly met others at the "Ready, Willing & Able" shelter who share the same passion for running that I do, and the understanding of the powerful difference that running can make in one's life.

There are plenty of rainy, cold mornings where I do not want to get out of bed to run. I just think of the dedication and motivation that these men have and it gives me a boost of energy. Most of them have had immense struggles in life and they continue to run 3-4 times a week at 6am and then go on to work a full day of manual labor. Each morning that I have with "Back on My Feet" leaves me feeling more energized and dedicated than the day before. It is truly an amazing organization and I have seen first-hand how it has transformed the homeless on our team.

It costs approximately $100 to get a new homeless member started, which goes to buy a new pair of shoes, socks, two shirts, one pair of shorts, one pair of pants, a hat and gloves. To host a member for an entire year it costs "Back on My Feet" $4,800.00 which includes entries in area races, social events and after a certain amount of time, dedication and commitment, BOMF helps to connect members with job training programs and evens offers scholarship and housing assistance. Please do what you can to help. Any gift, regardless of amount, is very appreciated. Thanks!
