Athena's Run for GYN Cancers
Every seven minutes a woman is given the diagnosis of having a gynecologic cancer. The economic impact of treating gynecologic tumors is staggering, with over $5 billion spent each year in the U.S. alone. But the human toll is worse, with over 28,000 U.S. women dying each year. Although researchers continue to search for more cost effective screening tools and better therapeutic options to detect, treat and prevent these cancers, additional efforts are needed to raise funding and elevate public awareness of gynecologic cancers.

Athena’s Run for Gynecologic Cancers was founded in 2010 in an effort to promote public awareness about these devastating cancers in the Piedmont Triad Region. Over the past three years, Athena’s Run has raised over $200,000 for the Gynecologic Cancer Fund at the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation. Donations from this fund are currently being used locally and nationally to support education and advocacy for gynecologic cancers; care of women to prevent, detect and treat gynecologic cancers; and research efforts for gynecologic cancer care and cure. To learn more about how these donations are being used, please visit our website at www.athenasrun.org.

This year, Athena's Run for GYN Cancers will be held on October 5, 2013. The goal of this 5K run and Survivor's Ceremony and Celebration Walk is to lift up women fighting gynecologic cancers, celebrate the lives of those who have lost their fight, and raise awareness and support to continue the battle against these devastating cancers.

We all have our reasons for joining the fight against gynecologic cancers, but we share one mission, finding a cure!
