Kim Bachman Memorial Gifts
In memory of Kim Bachman
My wife, Kimberly Bachman, passed away on August 11, 2011 after a brave, but relentless battle with ovarian cancer. It was difficult to watch her body being ravaged by one of the most insidious and deadliest forms of cancer. We knew little about ovarian cancer when Kim was first diagnosed. Unfortunately, we learned quickly how devastating this disease can be. Throughout the past three years, Kim endured unspeakable horrors. She underwent more surgical procedures than I can count. Extreme pain and infections led to nephrostomy tubes in both of her kidneys. She would later need a colostomy (which she and the kids would call her “new butt”) and a G-tube into her stomach. It’s hard for most women to imagine carrying their digestive system around at all times, but Kim did not let it stop her. My wife underwent exploratory surgery to search for cancer cells that remain hidden from blood tests and CT scans. She also endured many rounds of chemotherapy without success or remission. One of the most troubling aspects of the cancer and surgical procedures were the countless bowel blockages, all requiring multi-week hospitalizations with no food. She endured several bowel resections and surgeries that involved a full abdominal incision. Hospitalizations were typically two weeks or more. When she finally received a well-deserved release home with rest, she all too often would need to be readmitted within a few days. Despite their duration and severity, none of these horrors killed her spirit or desire to live life the way she wanted. She persevered through her difficulties to care for her family and maintain as normal a life as the cancer would allow. Her strong will was evidenced in her determination not to miss our scheduled beach vacation planned several months earlier. By the time the week arrived, she had already been placed under Hospice care. Fully aware that the end was fast approaching and under extreme pain, she spent the last full week of her life at the beach. It was a wonderful blessing for my family and a memory we will always cherish. Kim was an inspiration not only to me and my children, but to all who knew her. She touched the lives of many as she fought her battle with ovarian cancer with grace and dignity. Her battle, however, was not just her own. She was very passionate about raising awareness and support for ovarian and other gynecologic cancers. Last year she was one of the top fundraisers for Athena’s Run. She had planned to participate this year as well. Nothing would have given me greater joy than to walk alongside her in this year’s event. Instead, my girls and I will be walking in her memory. I know Kim would be proud to know we are continuing this fight on her behalf. Because ovarian cancer can be a hereditary disease, I cannot help but fear for the future of our three daughters. I will be walking for them as well. I hope you will join me in honoring Kim’s valiant battle with ovarian cancer and helping the many women who are still in the fight.
