Run for the Angel Twins is a 5k/1 Mile Walk/Run that will be held March 28, 2009 in honor of identical twins Cathryn and Corynne Bouchard, of Frisco, who lost their lives to Neimann Pick Type C (NPC) in 2008 before their second birthdays.

NPC is a disorder affecting lipid metabolism (the breakdown and use of fats and cholesterol in the body), in a way which causes harmful amounts of lipids to accumulate in the spleen, liver, lungs, bone marrow, and brain. These substances are building up in our bodies every day. As the substances build up in our brains, they cause neurological problems that worsen with time. The disease has been likened to a "Childhood Alzheimer's". Currently there is NO CURE for NPC and it is always fatal.

Niemann-Pick research may also be the key to finding ways to fight heart disease and stroke. We all know that high cholesterol is the main cause of heart disease. But until the gene that causes NPC was discovered, researchers had few opportunities to identify the complex processes that regulate cholesterol. How does the body know if it has too much cholesterol or too little? NPC research is beginning to provide answers.

In addition, your donations to Niemann-Pick research are also giving hope to those fighting Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s and NPC are progressive neurological diseases with similar effects on the brain. Brain cells in children with this disease are characterized by the formation of abnormal “tangles” that are identical to those of adults with Alzheimer’s disease, though the diseases are not otherwise closely related.
