| Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Patients can become paralyzed, although their mind remains unaffected. Currently there is no cure for ALS, and the survival rate is 3 to 5 years. The famous New York Yankees baseball player Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with ALS, and the disease is commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Physical Therapy Class of 2010 and 2011 at the Medical University of South Carolina is sponsoring the race, and all proceeds will be donated to the South Carolina Chapter of the ALS Association for support and research advancement. |
