|I've joined Team Challenge again and I need your help! I will complete the 13.1-mile Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half Marathon on December 2, 2012, to raise funds and awareness for research leading to improved treatment options and a cure for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
As many of you know, I have Crohn’s disease. I participated in Team Challenge already twice, and last season I was chosen to be the honored hero. It was such an incredible experience being able to share my story with people that may not have known anything about these diseases. Now, this season, I will be a mentor, which means I get to encourage my teammates to reach their goals and spread the word that we need a cure.
Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). It is estimated that as many as 1.4 million Americans have IBD; however, many more suffer in silence due to potential embarrassment and alienation. Crohn's disease may occur in people of all ages, but it is primarily a disease of adolescents and young adults, affecting mainly those between 15 and 35. However, Crohn's disease can also occur in people who are 70 or older and in young children as well. In fact, 10 percent of those affected -- or an estimated 100,000 -- are youngsters under the age of 18. On average, people are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in their mid-30s, although the disease can occur at any age.
Together, we can make a difference! Being a part of Team Challenge has become such a big part of my life. I have started so many new friendships and some of those friends who are also affected by these diseases, being a great support system. I have coaches who help get me to my goal and push me through my miles, which over the last year has helped me to loose 20lbs! And of course a great Team Challenge manager who helps motivate us week by week. Most important though is all of you who take the time to check out my website, come to my fundraisers and donate to this amazing cause. Without all of your help we wouldn't be getting thousands of dollars closer to finding a cure.
By now I hope you agree with me about the importance of this cause. Please help support me and the millions of others out their with these dieases.
ONE DAY WE WILL BE CROHN'S AND COLITIS FREE!!!
