War Hero Needs Help
SSG George Brosenne woke up on 15 May 2011 to attend drill for the Maryland National Guard. He was short of breath, his gums were bleeding and he had a fever of 103.7, but proceeded to fulfill his weekend commitment. He took pride in being a member of the National Guard; he saw them as his family, risked his life for them and for his country and enjoyed every minute of it. He would never imagine his life was almost ending. That evening SSG Brosenne was rushed to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Within one hour he received a blood transfusion and was soon rushed to Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he presented with signs of Leukemia with Diffuse Alveolar Hemorrhage (bleeding in his lungs), and necessitated admission into the intensive care unit. On 16 May 2011 SSG Brosenne was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a life threatening medical condition. He is in need of a bone marrow transplant and extensive chemotherapy. Just two days after being admitted to the ICU he received his first chemotherapy treatment and to date has received more than a dozen blood transfusions. SSG Brosenne spent a second visit to the ICU in July, but thankfully has pulled through that second crisis and is now awaiting his bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, George was not in active duty status at the time of his illness and does not have medical insurance at this time. Within his 15+ years in the service, SSG Brosenne has been deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2006 he received the Soldier’s Medal for attempting to save the lives of his comrades after an accident in October 2005 that took the lives of three members of the 243rd Engineer Company. This rarely awarded medal is to honor soldiers who risk their lives in non-combat situations (while deployed) to save the lives of others. During the ceremony SSG Brosenne was labeled a great man, soldier, and great American Hero; someone we shall not forget. SSG Brosenne is the kind of man that always puts others before himself; he has a huge heart and a personality that automatically lights up a room. We are asking that he not be forgotten now in his time of need.
