Karen "Big Mama K" training for Girls on the Run
The Finish Line is only the Beginning...
I turn 50 this year and have decided this next decade will be dedicated to my personal wellness, some race fun and making a difference! To commemorate my 50th birthday year, I will be training to complete (emphasis on complete not necessarily running) the following events:
  • Big Stair Climb in Seattle, 3/21/10
  • Eugene Half Marathon, 5/2/10
  • Eugene Women’s Half Marathon 9/7/10
  • Portland Full Marathon 10/10/10

The making a difference portion of my goal was to join the team of SoleMates for Girls on the Run. As a SoleMate, I just love the entire concept - I will become more physically & mentally fit while helping (literally!) to change the world, one girl at a time through Girls on the Run!

Girls on the Run inspires 3rd-8th grade girls to say true to themselves and live free from societal stereotypes. The 10-wk program innovatively weaves training for a 5K run with lessons to empower girls to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, and embrace their gifts.

My goal (besides just completing the events) is to raise $1,000 by June 1st. I just need 200 individuals to give $5.00 each or 100 to give $10... any amount will make a difference! Your donation will help support the girls in the Willamette Valley. Thank you for your donation and for taking the time to read what I'm up to!

Maui Marathon 1994. I'm up for the current challenge!
Girls on the Run is an innovative health education and wellness program that combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with life-changing, self esteem enhancing lessons that encourage healthy habits and an active lifestyle for third through eighth grade girls. SoleMates is the adult charity running program of Girls on the Run. We are a team of female and male athletes who pursue individual goals, such as running a marathon, to raise money for Girls on the Run programs nationwide. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
