Telling the story of Freedom as told by the Veterans who preserved it
A recent national Assessment Education poll (2006) discovered some startling statistics about our own high school students’ knowledge of U.S. History: • Asked why the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was significant, over 70% of 12th graders could not answer the question in any way. • 37% of 12th graders could not identify the “missiles in Cuba” as the answer to why the United States and Soviet Union came close to war in October 1962. • Over 86% of 12th graders could not identify a significant factor that led to United States involvement in the Korean War. • Shown a picture of a student with a sledgehammer beating a stone wall, with the caption “Berlin, 1989,” only 1% of 12th graders could correctly identify what event the picture depicted. • Given a map of the world, over 83% of 4th graders and 67% of 8th graders could not identify just two countries (including the U.S.) where the United States has sent soldiers to fight a war. • Given a graph showing increased military spending from 1935 to 1941, with a high spike between 1940 and 1941, and the possible answers: WWI; WWII; Korean War and Vietnam War, over 46% of 8th graders could not identify WWII as the cause for increased spending. Everyone who has donned a uniform and swore an oath tp protect and defend the U.S. Constitution has a story to tell. The freedom that we as a country cherish did not come freely, but it’s easy for young people who have grown up in relatively peaceful times to forget that, as the results in the survey above indicate. What we’re doing is creating a place where that story of freedom can be told in a different way-in stories of the individuals who lived it-American veterans. The National Veterans Freedom Park Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to creating a place where the story of freedom can be told through the stories of the veterans past, present and future. become a member of our history Chain of Command by making a monthly contribution of $10, $20, $30, $40, or $50.
