Syracuse Will Never Forget

The Syracuse Fire Department is proud to be involved in this year’s FDNY Tunnel to Towers Run on September 25th, which follows the footsteps of Stephen Siller. On September 11th, 2001 firefighter Stephen Siller had just gotten off the night shift at Squad 1, Park Slope, Brooklyn. He was on his way home to his wife and 5 children when his scanner told of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. He stopped and called his wife Sally to tell her he would be late because he had to go back and help. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear. When Stephen arrived at the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, it was already closed to traffic. With sixty pounds of gear strapped to his back, he ran over 2 miles through the Tunnel, hoping to meet up with his own company, Squad 1, who had responded to the World Trade Center. These would be Stephen’s final heroic steps. On September 25th over 35 members of the Syracuse Fire Department will follow and honor every one of those footsteps. Our team is running to raise funds for The Burn Foundation of Central New York and for The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Money raised will be split between these foundations. In honor of the 10th anniversary of September 11th we are excited to make our goal $10,000.

EVERY FAMILY TOUCHED INTIMATELY BY 9/11 HAS BEEN SHAPED FOREVER...EVERY FIREFIGHTER, EVERY CITY WORKER, EVERY NEW YORKER, EVERY AMERICAN AND EVERY WORLD CITIZEN NOW HAVE A DESTINY, A CHARGE TO RECLAIM THE SACRED GROUND, TO BRING HOPE TO FUTURE GENERATIONS...TO LET PEOPLE SEE, FEEL AND KNOW THAT THE HUMAN SPIRIT WILL TRIUMPH AND THAT THERE IS A COMMON THREAD OF LOVE THAT CONNECTS AND BINDS ALL HUMANITY.
