Rypkema Runnings... Barbara & Mikayla
Running for fun...
Kayla and I after the 5k... we both placed!
Hi and Welcome! Rypkema Runnings all started with a church camp. MiKayla wanted to go. I had decided in November of 2010 that I wanted to run a marathon. The church camp hosted a 5K to raise money for the camp. Soooooooo... Kayla and I decided to run it together! From that point our running together has taken off. Kayla had expressed an interest in Girls on the Run for a couple of years and I was always hesitant. Over the summer I received an email from a friend (Thanks Bev!) letting me know that the middle school, where the twin's go, had a need for a Girls on Track (the middle school program) coach. I checked it out and ended up volunteering. This fall Kayla has been doing Girls on the Run at TES while I have been coaching Girls on Track at BMS. Kayla joins me on my coaching days, most of the time, and runs with my team as well. It has been an experience that has been amazing, even after so short a time. Kayla has grown through her team and I have grown from coaching my team. The curriculum that is covered is what girls face, even at those young ages, and provides tools and support to help them be themselves and succeed being exactly as the person God intended them to be! During the coaches training I heard about SoulMates. I asked a few questions. Kayla and I discussed it. And we both wanted to give something back to the local program. So... here we are! My race is the Richmond Suntrust Marathon on November 12th. This is my first marathon and I have been training for it all year. I’m still scared to death though! I keep telling myself… all I have to do is finish! Kayla’s race is the Girls on the Run Celebration 5k the following Saturday, on November 19th. That will be her third competition race and her second 5k…. and she is SO ready for it! That should be the “needed” information. If you want to make a positive impact on the girls (future women!) of this area we would appreciate your support of Girls on the Run Greater Lynchburg through a sponsorship pledge for either Kayla or I. Our goal is $500 and we are off and running!

Goal
Girls on the Run is an innovative health education and wellness program that combines training for a 3.1 mile run/walk event with life-changing, self esteem enhancing lessons that encourage healthy habits and an active lifestyle for third through eighth grade girls. SoleMates is the adult charity running program of Girls on the Run. We are a team of female and male athletes who pursue individual goals, such as running a marathon, to raise money for Girls on the Run programs nationwide. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
