Bringing Families Together in Support of the Injured Marine

Dear Fellow Americans: After a successful 2009 Ride for Semper Fi, my teammates and I will again be cycling the 430 miles in honor and support of injured marines. Our team of 50 cyclists will be riding from Phoenix to San Diego in the Ride for Semper Fi 2010 from October 13-17th. As many of you may have heard, the Marines have had a troop surge in Afghanistan and the number of US troops killed has roughly doubled in the first few months of 2010 in comparison to the entire year in 2009. Those deaths have been accompanied by a dramatic spike in the number of wounded, with the injuries more than tripling so far this year. Unfortunately, this is a trend that is expected to continue. The fund for Semper Fi brings families of injured marines together by allowing parents or spouses the opportunity to be with their injured marine as they go through very painful rehabilitation. This can take several months or years. The program lets the family members focus on their loved one’s recovery, rather than financial burdens. The fund can cover anything from the family’s mortgage to everyday living expenses, which allows them to have peace during this difficult time. The money raised also helps with basic needs, such as wheelchairs, crutches, or other devices to assist those with injuries. Once the soldier has recovered, the fund continues to assist in education and retraining, allowing the marine to feel a sense of accomplishment and reenter society. In many cases, if a soldier is injured in year two of his service, the government will only allow education benefits for the period of time he was in service prior to his injury. I am very passionate about taking care of our wounded soldiers and their families. They have dedicated their lives, and in some cases lost their lives, to allow us the freedom that America offers.
