Shannon's Race for a Cause
Racing to support those affected by breast cancer
As a member of the 2008 Pink Streak Marathon Team, I welcome you to my fundraising page for the Breast Cancer Network of Strength Illinois! This organization's mission is to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. They continue to provide the community with programs and resources free of charge, to anyone touched by breast cancer. I have been biting at the bit the past few years to run my first marathon, and this is finally my year! What better way to do it than to help raise money for such a great cause! According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today (after lung cancer) and is the most common cancer among women. The main reason I chose to run for this organization is because I have been indirectly affected by breast cancer myself. First my grandmother was diagnosed, then my own mother. I remember how I cried when I first heard of the news, and I knew I wanted to be there in any way possible to support them both. I remember taking my grandmother on road trips to the doctor’s office, but I never felt I was able to do enough. When my mother was diagnosed I was still in college two hours from home so the distance made it problematical for me to always be there for her. Thank God she’s as strong a woman as she is because had she not had such a positive outlook the situation would have been much more difficult for me to handle. She truly is an inspiration and I’ll always remember the beautiful moments when I found out both had become cancer survivors. God bless their doctors for having the knowledge to treat this monster. At times I still feel regretful about being so busy in my own life that I wasn't able to be there more for my family. Running for this cause is just a little way for me to remind both my grandma and mom how much I love and care about them and how proud I am that they conquered this awful disease. Life takes the darker road sometimes, but strength and good friends and family always help each other get back on track. I wish to go above and beyond the minimum amount of $850, and hope that whether or not you've been affected by breast cancer you will be willing to help me help reach my goal of at least $1,500. Any donations would be more than appreciated, and thank you so much in advance!
