Ocean of Hope - dedicated to the sea of people affected by cancer
Welcome to my fundraising page and thanks for taking a minute to learn what we're about at Ocean of Hope. I've been a member of Lanakila Outrigger Canoe Club since 2000 when I started competing with our junior program. I've always loved the sheer experince of being on the water. For the past few seasons being a member of O2H has brought more meaning to paddling for me. Not only do I get to do something I love but I have a chance to support a cause that is not well known at the same time - and it doesn't get much better than that! When I've talked about the Sarcoma Alliance to my friends and family one of the first things they say is "That's great, but what is Sarcoma?" Sarcomas are malignant tumors that arise in the connective tissue of the body. Normal connective tissue include, fat, blood vessels, nerves, bones, muscles, deep skin tissues, and cartilage which means it can occur anywhere. According to the American Cancer Society fewer than 1% of people diagnosed with cancer will have sarcoma. In other words, sarcoma is a very rare disease. Sarcomas are more common among childhood cancers, accounting for 15% of those diagnosed per year. Because it is so rare and it takes multiple forms in multiple locations, sarcoma is difficult to detect, often misdiagnosed and complex to treat. This can lead to a very isolated feeling for those affected with this disease which leads to the Sarcoma Alliance's mission. Nearly everyone has been affected by a type of cancer in some way, whether personally or through someone they know. From what I've experienced I know the scope of cancer reaches much further than the affected individual. What attracts me to the Sarcoma Alliance is that it offers people who suffer from the disease and their families a place to find guidance, education and support, as well as find current medical information and treatment options, and the ability to network with others. One of the best parts about Ocean of Hope is that it is a grass roots organization where 100% of your donation will go towards those who suffer from this cancer and to the resources which will help them. After training all year, my team will be racing from Avalon, Catalina to Newport Beach in the U.S. Outrigger Championships on September 12. I hope that my efforts to raise money through training and racing will bring help, hope, and some day a cure. I am proud to be a part of the Ocean of Hope. Thank you for taking the time to donate to a cause that is so improtant. -Kellie
