Hi friends! In two months, I am hitting the major birthday milestone of 40. I am quite excited about reaching such a significant age because I consider each year of life to be a gift and a blessing. Last year when I turned 39, I wrote out a list of 39 things I wanted to do in the year leading up to 40. Two things on that list were: 1. Run a half-marathon and 2. Donate money to a cause close to my heart. If you know my story, you know that I was born with a condition called Spastic Diplegia, a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, in which the nerves in the brain are sending faulty signals to the muscles in my legs. These signals tell the muscles in my legs to constantly remain constricted, or tight. Obviously this makes running/walking/looking cute in high heels particularly difficult. Getting older has been harder on my body than it should for someone my age. Three years ago I had a major surgery called SDR, in which a surgeon cut the nerves in my spine which were sending those faulty signals. It has been a long road of recovery since then (I also had another surgery during that time on my heel cords.). However, I feel like I am in the best shape of my life thanks to a lot of hard work put in daily and the constant support of my family. Although SDR changed my life in some ways, I still live with daily pain. This is not something I dwell on or often speak about to others. It simply is what it is when one has CP. As you can see, completing a half-marathon is a pretty big deal for me. In two weeks, on March 5, 2017 my husband and I are running the Little Rock Half-Marathon. I want to run for myself but also as a way to raise money for an important cause. The OM Foundation was created by Bonner Paddock, an adult who also has CP and has accomplished some incredible physical feats such as marathons, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and completing an IronMan (Read his book "One More Step". It does not disappoint). In recent years, Bonner has devoted his life to helping children who also have Cerebral Palsy. Bonner's foundation is committed to raising money to support Early Learning Centers in which children with CP can receive the continuous therapies they need to have the quality of life they deserve. Currently there are two centers, one in Southern California and one in Tanzania (If you know me, you know I love the Africa connection!). I have been fortunate enough to have always had access to quality healthcare and the needed resources to help me have a great quality of life. As I approach 40, I would love to give back to others who may not have the same access to needed therapies and medical interventions. This is where you come in, friends. So many of you have supported me, encouraged me, and walked this path with me in various ways over the years. I would be so honored if you would donate to the OM Foundation to support my half-marathon and (more importantly) to help children receive the therapies and resources they so desperately need. There is no need to make a grand donation (Unless you just want to..then please feel free!). If so many of you who have walked this path with me in some way simply skipped a latte for the day and donated $5, we could make a big difference in the lives of many children. As mentioned, there are only two weeks before the half-marathon. I would love it if you would quickly click the Donate button NOW and make a donation to the OM Foundation. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. God bless! Follow along with us on race day via Facebook, Instagram (@lynley.phillips), and Twitter (@savethephillips).
