| OHF Walk for a Cure in Honor of Mason Reiter |
|
| The Reiter family of Livonia will participate in the 2011 OHF Walk for a Cure on Sunday September 25 at Wayne County Parks, Nankin Mills in Westland, MI and would like others to join them. Our goal is to raise awareness in the medical community and the general public to promote early diagnosis of Hyperoxaluria and help fund further research to find a cure. The walk is the first for the Detroit area. Walter and Nancy's son Mason, 6, a first grader at Buchanan Elementary in Livonia, has been diagnosed through the OHF funded Mayo Clinic Hyperoxaluria Center with Primary Hyperoxaluria. PH is a very rare disease of the kidney and liver, which causes the never ending formation of kidney stones. All patients with PH have kidney stones, 50% have kidney failure by age of 15 and 80 % have kidney failure by age 30. Currently the only treatment is a combined kidney and liver transplant, which in itself comes with very high risks. The proceeds from the walk benefit the Oxalosis & Hyperoxaluria Foundation. The OHF is the only foundation in the world dedicated to finding a cure for PH, committing millions of dollars to research and patient programs to help all those who suffer the effects of PH. |
