As a nation, we have lost more than 5,000 service members in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Perhaps more sobering is the fact that more than 4,000 American children have lost at least one parent in the global war on terror. An organization that I support is called No Greater Sacrifice (NGS) which is working to raise enough money to pay for the education of these children whose parents so bravely sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
If we cannot be over there with our soldiers, the least we can do is take care of their families back home. I’ll be running the Marine Corps 10K race on October 25 in Washington DC to help pay for the college educations of four siblings who lost their father in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. You can read the story of Staff Sergeant William S. Jackson II on the NGS Endurance website at www.nogreatersacrifice.org/endurance.php.
I started running because I didn't want Sheara running alone in the evenings. Now we support each other to get out and run every other day between three and six miles.
This will be our third 10K this year. Our goal is to finish this 10K in under an hour, which is about 10 minutes per mile. |
