| DPW Crusty with Heart of Gold Vows To Rid Troubled Marathon of Cigarette Butt Problem By Setting Example and Running With Own Ashtray!
On January 20th 2008, 10,000 runners will take part in the Carlsbad Marathon in San Diego.
Weldboy will be but one of them.
The Carlsbad Marathon, whose new eco-slogan is “Only Your Feet Hit The Ground,” will be the first event required by the city to develop and implement a litter abatement plan, under new requirements related to the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan.
The approved litter abatement plan, designed by Keep California Beautiful used Burning Man’s Black Rock City, the largest practicing Leave No Trace Event in the world, as their case study for successful behavioral change in opposition of mandating structural controls.
"Runners are lazy." says 42 year old Weldboy, pauses for a moment, trying to look reflective, expertly drags his cigarrette and continues, "I like to imagine a perfect world where all runners...from all walks of life... carry their ashtrays with them when they run so their cigarettes never actually hit the ground."
Weldboy is referring to the litterbug marathon runner mindset that someone will just pick up their cigarette butts after them when they ceremoniously slamm them on the ground as they continue running.
"It's really about being responsible for one's impact. I guess I'm going to have to set that example, no matter what the cost. I mean, if not me, then who?"
Weldboy, whose first name is Weld and last name is Boy but prefers the user friendly "Weldboy" is officially entered into the Carlsbad Marathon as an Eco-Runner. |
