On November 7, 2010 I will be running The New York City Marathon as a member of Jack's Team. We are a dedicated team of runners raising money and awareness for Melanoma Research.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. 40-50% of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. It accounts for just 4% of the skin cancers, yet is the leading cause of skin cancer related deaths.
The main cause of melanoma is spending too much time in the sun. People with fair skin and light hair are at greatest risk, however anyone exposed to large amounts of sun is at risk.
Melanoma is the second most common cancer for young adults ages 15-29. The risk of being diagnosed with melanoma doubles with 5 or more sunburns at any age, and exposure to tanning beds in youth increases the risk to 75%.
We are all at risk. The work that Jack's Fund is doing to develop awareness programs and to increase research funding is so very important.

**I am dedicating my New York City Marathon run to my sister Erin. Erin passed away unexpectedly this past Father's Day. She was only 49. We share the same birthday. Although she did not have melanoma she did visit the dermatologist frequently and had recently had a lesion on her face removed. She had fair skin and blonde hair. She was not a runner but always marveled at the many marathons I have run. I know that Erin will be there to carry me if I should need help along the marathon course. |
