Dear Friends and Family,
I trust this letter finds you doing well! As some of you may know, I have recently registered for my first IRONMAN event. This “race” will be held in Chattanooga, TN (hilly!) on September 28, 2014. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and ends with a leisurely 26.2 mile run! Now I’m sure many of you, if not all, are wondering why I want to do this. (Believe me, I have given this a great deal of thought as well!) My answer is two-fold. First, fitness is a way of life that I have chosen for myself. Secondly, because I CAN!
In my profession as a Registered Nurse, I encounter people everyday who are simply not able to choose this kind of lifestyle. Although harsh, this reality makes me appreciate my health that much more! Having said that, it leads me to the focus of this letter. Leave the blood, sweat and tears of this next year’s physical training to me, but I am asking for some help. I am asking for any amount of monetary support from you so that I can reach my goal of $5000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).
When I signed up for this IRONMAN, I was given this opportunity for a charity entry. I cannot think of a better way to go through this journey, both mentally and physically, than knowing that my one year of training will help those individuals with Crohn’s and Colitis for a lifetime!
As I said earlier, any and all donations help me reach my goal of finishing this 140.6 mile IRONMAN, and more importantly lessen the daily struggles of living with either of these conditions.
I thank you and the 1.4 million people affected by Crohn’s or Colitis sincerely THANK YOU!!!
Kelly Brake, aka the IRONWOMAN

About Team Challenge
Team Challenge is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s endurance training and fundraising program. With Team Challenge, you’ll find new strength inside yourself, and help find cures for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, two painful, seldom-discussed and debilitating digestive diseases. With our Half Marathon and Triathlon Training Programs, you'll train for a rewarding and exciting endurance event at one of our great destination races while raising vital funds for research into these diseases. These dollars will help make new treatments possible and fuel the search for cures.
About Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both major categories of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD). IBD affects an estimated 1.4 million Americans. These chronic diseases tend to run in families and they affect males and females equally.
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine.
Since our founding over four decades ago, CCFA has remained at the forefront of research in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Today, we fund cutting-edge studies at major medical institutions, nurture investigators at the early stages of their careers, and finance underdeveloped areas of research. In addition, our educational workshops and programs, along with our scientific journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, enable medical professionals to keep pace with this rapidly growing field.
