| Our son Tristan (age 10) was diagnosed with Epilepsy 9 months ago after an EEG proved that the tonic-clonic (aka grand mal) seizure he'd had in front of his big brother the week before had not in fact been a fluke. Since then it's been an emotional roller-coaster of anti-seizure drug side-effects, alternative treatment options, academic challenges, and dealing with the emotional strife a child feels when he's not in control of his own body. Tristan is a brave kid, though. So far his seizures have all been nocturnal -- triggered by fatigue and/or anxiety -- and have followed the same series of events. He's taking control by trusting his instincts and knowing the warning signs. Tristan may be a boy with Epilepsy, but with the support of his family, teachers, counselors, medical team and awareness campaigns like the IMOK run, he is also a warrior.
My family and a few close friends are running first and foremost so Tristan can see his "village" show up and support him. If we can help raise a little cash for local epilepsy support groups and efforts to find a cure too though, then we will be thrilled! The people we've met through local groups have been invaluable resources for us as we make our way along this journey. I personally want to do anything I can to give back to the cause.
Thanks to all of you for the support!
xx,
