Girls on the Run of South Hampton Roads is a non-profit educational and running program for pre-adolescent girls (ages 8-11). The program strengthens girls physically, emotionally, and socially to face the pressures of adolescence.
The 12-week program uses a character, self-esteem and self-confidence building curriculum that includes life lessons, discussions, and running games. This is accomplished with a female mentor/coach in a girl-positive environment where girls can feel free to express themselves and build confidence.
The goal of Girls on the Run of South Hampton Roads is to empower girls early in their lives to find strength, courage and self-respect from within and draw upon it throughout their lives. The overarching objective is to help prevent teenage pregnancies, substance abuse and eating disorders.
The Girls on the Run of South Hampton Roads program is based on the belief that it is critical to reach girls at this early age to prepare them for adolescence and prevent at-risk behaviors. Girls on the Run of South Hampton Roads sessions address the following issues:
• Self-Esteem
• Body Image
• Nutritional Awareness
• Dangers of Drugs and Alcohol
• Emotional Health
• Peer Pressure
• Anger Management
• Gossiping
• Stereotyping and Discrimination
• Good Communication Skills
Girls on the Run of South Hampton Roads uses running as a tool in combination with life lessons because studies show that females who participate in physical activities experience higher levels of self esteem and confidence, as well as lower levels of depression than those who do not. Exercise has also shown to boost girls' self -esteem Girls on the Run of South Hampton Roads emphasizes the importance of contributing to the community and trains girls to run or walk in a non-competitive 3.1-mile community running event. |
