| Genre's Kids with Cancer Fund is a nonprofit organization formed in October 2009 in honor of Genre Baker. Genre was 8-years old whne he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He has been in remisson since June 2009 and is doing well. When Genre came home from his initial 14-day hospital stay, he decided that every child diagnosed with cancer needs a handheld video game to help pass the many hours of treatment and transfusions. As he moved along this path, his ideas have continued to grow and have developed into the many services we provide today. Genre has maintained a positive outlook and wants to reach out to other children who have cancer. It is our mission to support children and families - emotionally, financially, and spiritually - on their jouney through pediatric cancer.
We provide handheld video games to each child diagnosed with cancer at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The video games truly help the children pass the time and escape the disease during the many hours spent in the hospital and in treatment or transfusion.
GKWCF realizes that many costs associated with pediatric cancer are not medical. We will work with families to identify immediate and long-term needs, and will help in any way possible.
Photographers have teamed with GKWCF to provide free photo services to kids who are oncology patients at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
It is normal for emotional responses to vary greatly during a cancer diagnosis, especially when it is your child. GKWCF volunteers have walked this path before and are willing to listen, to talk, and to share their experiences and practical advice. We have found that the compassion and understanding shared between families with a common cancer bond is invaluable.
GKWCF has partnered with several golf facilities/pros who have committed their time and are providing free golf lessons to kids who are oncology patients at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. |
